Introduction
This was an impromptu trip that wasn't supposed to happen! I was back home to Lagos for holidays (Trip report http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trip-...lagos-london-dec-2010-aug2011.html) and my mum came up with the idea of going to Dubai for a few days and for some silly reason I was a bit reluctant about the idea. Eventually, my dad advised that my mum and I go for a few days so that she could relax a bit from work while I just add this to my holiday. I wanted to go from London because I could use the A380 and the first class suites but once I saw that EK were now bringing the suites to Lagos I decided we just go now before I loose this opportunity.
I called up the Emirates office a few days to our original intended depature date and I was told there was more than enough space for the next few weeks. I made the booking but the fare had gone up by more than double. The last time I flew EK F was about 3 years ago and it was so much cheaper. Just as i was about to drop the phone, the clueless agent told me about the august special promotion which included a visa and free hotel accommodation at the Armani Hotel which made me excited because we were already going to stay there anyway. I already knew about this special offer for F & J class passengers because it was on their website but the site stated that it would start in august! I wondered if Nigeria was an exception as we were travelling in July. I was assured that everything would be done when we get to their office to pay on monday. When it was time for that, we were told our booking was cancelled and that the visa takes about three days even though she clearly told me we would get it done before our departure. The booking cancellation was very stupid. I made the booking on Saturday by around 1.30 in the afternoon and they closed at 2. They clearly dont open on sundays and they dont accept card payments in Nigeria but the booking was cancelled on sunday by 12 noon! I was completely shocked. The agent kept saying it was the ''system'' which I found quite funny and senseless!? Anyway eventually we had to do the visas our selves which took about 5days. When we went back to get the tickets the following week, we were finally told that the offer was only for people travelling in august even though we were still told numerous times that we were still entitled to it. I wasn't angry or very surprised as I had prepared my mind for it due to the inconsistencies in their customer service so far. My mum was not quite happy about that though. At the end of the day everything was sorted. I began to wonder why things like this only happen to me in Nigeria!? I must admit at home, customer service is no one's priority even for foreign companies.
There are two daily flight from LOS-DXB. We were able to get a seat on the evening flight which is never really the better option as about 70% of the flights depart around that time. The airport was of course chaotic. My mum had to meet me and my dad at the airport from a very casual meeting because of the traffic situation that has taken over Lagos. She had no time to even change her outfit to something a bit more travel like so she didn't even look like she was travelling. Check in was sourced out to the Lagos airport staff who don't really care about anything. So it took a while to check us in. Security was another story altogether. We were on the priority line for about 45 mins. No one was smiling at all. This is one of the reasons I don't fly BA out of LOS any more. Because of this we could't go to the Lounge but it wasn't like I was looking forward to it. We made our way to the gate where pre-boarding had started.
The Flight
Route; Lagos to Dubai
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
Registration: A6-ECT
Load in F: 7/8
We boarded and were greeted in a cold manner by 2 young nice looking female flight attendants. No one offered to help us with our bags. We were greeted by the purser who was a middle aged French man named Simon. He warmed up to me when he found out I was a trainee pilot and allowed me to go to the cockpit where the captain was half the age of the first officer. That was the first time I saw that and it gave me more hope about my flying career.
The cabin was clean and very welcoming. Quite cosy and didn't look too tacky to me but I knew that after a while, claustrophobia might set in but that was no reason to enjoy the lovely ambience of the cabin. The other flight attendants were just there. No one smiled at all. It might have been frustration carried over from the airport. There were just so many lapses in the pre departure service. It took a while for them to ask me if i wanted any drink. The service was just off and my mum wondered what was wrong with them. I left my seat to the only free window seat for take off. After take off, I went back to my seat and they hadn't cleared my empty glass for take off. Not very safe I believe.

The menu was ok but I was really expecting caviar. Since that was unavailable, I opted to start with the duck and go with the Black pepper beef fry for my main course. That was a big mistake as the rice that accompanied it was not cooked at all. It felt like I was eating pebbles. My mum went with the Lamb loin fillet. She wasn't so hungry so she gave some of it to me and it was amazing! Probably the best entrée I have had on a plane. Some severe turbulence caused my drinks to spill ever where. After this I was like a stuffed animal.lol The food was more than enough and I must say EK serves spectacular bread in first. I could live on their bread alone.
We then asked for a duvette and mattress during the turn down service and we were told that those aren't offered on flight to Lagos !!? I was so confused because the last time we used them from Lagos, we were offered that. It should be standard for F! One of the initially cold good-looking flight attendant who was making my bed for me was immediately remorseful and assured me EK was still a good airline. I kind of felt for her in a way. It seemed she was very aware of their falling standards. She later insisted I write a letter of complaint which I did mainly because I wanted to see if I could grab some miles. That didn't happen though lol She said she had already filled a complaint herself. All in all, the flight was ok. Could have been way better but it's almost impossible for all your flights to be close to perfect. I had to keep a positive attitude because of what was paid The seats were comfortable enough. Although my bed didn't go very flat, i found ways to enjoy it. The suite idea is certainly a nice gesture which I have always wanted to try and I was impressed with it. I just wish it would have the option of being a bit more open as it can actually feel like a coffin:D
I will post more pics of Dubai, the hotel and the return flight late today
Enjoy : )

Hi Oge,
Thank you for posting your trip report. The photos are of good quality and very clear.
I am sorry to learn that the reception on board was cold and unsmiling. Whatever hassles crew may have had on the ground should not result in anything less than professional service on board. At least you had a partial recompense in being invited into the cockpit and meeting the Captain and First Officer. Cool.
The meals looked fresh and well-presented but you really should have sent the uncooked rice back and requested something else.
I am surprised by the lack of a mattress and duvet not being offered. Even on day-time flights from/ to Europe I have always been offered at least a mattress by cabin crew "to make the seat more comfy". Perhaps they forgot to load some?
Hopefully your stay at the Armani was more enjoyable and the return flight was better. I look forward to reading your next instalment.

Only later EK called me and told me, that this wasn't true and I have to pay for it! At the airport in FRA I was told, that preferred seats were not available, but after talking to the supervisor, I found out, that those seats were still available...

Thanks for an insightful trip report!
It really points to the continued problem with Emirates - inconsistencies of cabin service and the inability of the multi-cultural crew to coordinate the service.
I am really surprised about the lack of sleeper service on this flight - it is pretty standard on Emirates especially on overnight flights.
Thanks for sharing and look forward to your return flight!

Certainly the problem with the Middle East carriers
Actually, I recently flew OMAN from BKK-MCT-FRA last month in J class, and the crew from BKK-MCT just sucked. So unorganised, on my side i only had the 1 woman, and on the other they had 3.. thats right 3 whilst 1 woman would come every 30 minutes if I was lucky. .. Well I certainly filled out the customer survey and told them what I thought.
also MCT airport is a complete hole, ground staff who cant speak english, and "western" staff who cant speak arabic, so they cant even talk to eachother
The flight to FRA was much better. Very good Asian FA's. Usually its the asians who give the best service, and the PJ's were pretty sweet.

I guess the saying for Emirates F class is that "Not everything that glitters is gold" and especially not in Emirates gold themed First Class cabins. But then these inconsistencies are all through the rest of the cabins as well. The saying " A mixed bag of nuts" is what clearly identifies them. Best of luck as they continue to hire and fill their aircraft, yet continue on a downward spiral due to not having the right staff to do the job.

When will these Middle Eastern carriers, especially Emirates learn that good looks is not everything in hiring FAs. It goes to show that nice looking FA's do not necessarily make great flight attendants!!. Just look at the Asian carriers, especially MH who quite literally have less attractive FAs in terms of looks, but their stellar service (even in Y) is miles ahead of FAs on carriers such as EY, EK. And this unfriendly service is in First Class where you should be greated as an honoured guest. Seriously it is not the FAs such as these that need to be sacked, it's the people hiring them!! Enough of my rant!!! (Always wanted to be an FA but never really got in, I guess I lacked the Oomph factor lol). Besides it is a known fact that some, not all FAs usually join EK simply to see the world and then are gone as soon as they were hired.

Immigration was fast and before we got to our belt, our suitcases were already waiting for us. Before we left the baggage hall, we were stopped by some company that deals in vacation properties and we were literally lured into the whole idea which we did not regret. We proceeded to the Emirates ground transfer stand and were assigned to one of their Volvo's.
It felt so nice being a Dubai again. This was my third time there and while this was not a sight seeing trip at all, there were many new attractions that had opened since I last visited; one of them being the building we were going to be staying in. I was very eager to see what was new

This short stay in Dubai ended up being one of my best trips. The hospitality of the Armani hotel staff was simply divine, professional and consistent. I could't fault any thing or ask for more. The service we experienced was wonderful and I really cannot find the right words to praise the staff. I highly recommend this hotel.
All good things come to an end but when it was time to go, they made sure we left Dubai very well. We were treated to chauffeur driven Bently Continental flying spur which was complementary. Once we arrived at the airport, there was a representative from the hotel already waiting for us. He collected our passports from us and saw us through the check-in process till security. His presence at the airport was totally unexpected and a pleasant surprise. It was really a case of travel made very very easy. These kind of surprises add a lot to one's travel experience. I must say I am not the biggest fan of DXB terminal 3. There is just something about it that makes it look so cheap. While the exterior looks really nice, the interior looks like it was really rushed and those silver poles don't really help it look better IMO. I did miss the older terminal because that one is at least less of a ''bling bling'' feast on the inside. The Lounge IMG_6417 by ogepma, on Flickr
The EK F lounge is huge but the design seems a bit off. The openness is a good idea but the noise from the terminal made it very known to me that I was in a very busy airport. Of course the usual tackiness of EK was present but there were still some really nice areas that looked clean and polished. It looked as if they just went to a large furniture store, bought everything and dumped them in the lounge. It's a nice place to relax before a flight but I have to say again I prefer the old F lounge. Once we boarded, we were greeted by the extremely pleasant purser and another very nice flight attendant. They took our bags from us and showed us to our seats. This was a good sign that this flight was going to be awesome. Once we were seated, they gave us the good news that we were the only one's in F. Wow, I had at least 10 suites all to my self! The purser was a British Jamaican lady named Anora while the other flight attendant was a South African. On our inbound flight, my mum and I also noticed that we weren't addressed by name. This time around, they addressed us by name. They were very engaging and genuinely happy to serve us. they really made us feel at home. My mum then looked at me and said "now this is more like it". This was going to be a true F flight. I also noticed a nice thick duvette and mattress by my seat and I was like hmmm, I thought these are not supposed to be on flights to Lagos lol. This was my first time on an A345. It was nice flying on it as it might soon be a rare aircraft to fly on. The seats were what I would call the ''classic'' F suites. I remember when they were rolled out several years back. It was nice flying on the pioneering F suites. We pushed back on time for a slightly lengthy taxi to runway 30R. I eventually went to sleep only to be woken up by some very severe turbulence a few minutes later. This was going to last for the rest of the flight. It was so bad that the captain told the cabin attendants not to serve any pre landing meals and once i looked out of the window every where was white and that's how it remained for the last 4 hours of the flight. But I was to tired to be bothered by my rocking bed so I went back to sleep while my mum kept laughing while watching a movie called Arthur. I must say despite the turbulence, I really enjoyed this flight. Probably one of my best flights. They crew were ready, willing and able to serve. They only draw back is the lack of amenity kits on day flights. I mean it doesn't really make sense not to have that in F at least. I already knew this so I wasn't disappointed per say. It's just something worth pointing out.
I would definitely fly EK again. All I ask for is just some consistency. I want to always know what to expect IMG_6738 by ogepma, on Flickr

Thank you very much! I did alert purser about the meal but I was already full from what my mum left for me. She barely ate anything. Hi Oge,
I am glad that I came by to read other people's comments as I expected your follow up to be in a new thread.
An excellent report with lovely photos. The Armani Hotel looks very stylish and the views from your suite....How nice of them to have someone on hand to help with check-in at the airport.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that the F Lounge in T3 is tacky but it does have a rather eclectic feel to it. I couldn't help thinking of an upmarket furniture show-room last time I was there So many different styles of seating and decor. But the staff are always on hand to seem willing to help with any requests. I notice that EK has opened up a new F Lounge in T1 - did you manage a look in?
Quoting ogepma (Reply 10): My mum then looked at me and said "now this is more like it".
Now the return flight is much more like the EK that I know. A proper welcome on board and assistance with reaching your seats and being made comfortable. From the lovely smile, your mother truly seems to have enjoyed the experience.
We used to have the A345 on the PER run and I preferred it to other aircraft that used to come. Is it may imagination or was it quieter? These days we alternate between the 77L and 77W.
Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed reading your report.

Quoting ogepma (Reply 10): a nice place to relax before a flight but I have to say again I prefer the old F lounge.
EK's just relaunched the old F lounge in concourse 1. It is smaller and cosier than th T3 F lounge. It has a smoking area upstairs as well as sleeping loungebeds.
Maybe next time if you have enough time you can stroll across to concourse 1............
Glad you enjoyed it. You description of the lounge is perfect, well put. The staff were quite nice and helpful too. I didn't know there was a lounge. Maybe next time I would go there instead but I would arrive at the airport early enough to enjoy it.
She certainly did enjoy it and the empty cabin was a major plus.
I really love the A340 family and yes I think it's quieter. VS uses A346s to Lagos and that's what I use all the time. It's a very relaxed aircraft. I still have my soft spot for 777s though especially 77W.
Thank you! It defiantly is well photographed. It is a simply phenomenal attraction and I also very much agree with you about the photos LOL. When I search for pictures of Dubai, similar pictures always come up.

I like your photos and they are very detailed. I also like the Armani hotel, it's an excellent place and also offers fantastic night life downstairs in prive.
Whilst I would agree that sometimes ek can be unfriendly so far I have found them to always give good service in all cabins.
I'm sorry to say though I think you seem to expect people to bow down to your feet - taking luggage for example it's not mandatory and whilst you lift your case once in a while they have to do it every day and I'm sure emirates won't compensate any crew for a bad back because they lifted someone's bag.
Greeting by name should have been done yes I agree.
I personally find the writing style and perhaps it's my interpretation to be quite arrogant and my feeling is that because your travelling F you write as if they are servants.
I'm now a firm believer that regardless of travelling Y,C,F or even via P.J no body is a servant or should be looked down upon regardless of their job or title.
Thank you for your input. You seem to be a good EK fan and I perfectly understand that the report on my outbound flight may not favour you. I didn't in any way state that I expected them to bow down on the floor for me. When you pay 6 times the price of Y you at least expect them to be a bit FRIENDLIER. This was not my first time in EK F. My previous flights with them, they insisted they had my bag taken off me and showed me to my seat. I don't think any of them would have had their backs broken by rolling my bag to a seat without an over head bin. It's not like I was angry about it as I could perfectly roll my bag and find my seat, I was simply stating that fact because of the inconsistency in the service. Or are you saying consistency is not mandatory as well? If helping with your bag is not mandatory why offer it at all?
I honestly do not know how my writing style is arrogant. I was simply just stating my experience in a very lenient manner or didn't you read my conclusion on the outbound flight? I deliberately wrote this report in this manner to avoid comments like yours. Some other passengers would have been way angrier than I was yet I tried to look at the situation from the point of view of the crew so I also fail to see how I looked down on them. I was having a chat with one of the flight attendants and she did explain to me the whole inconsistency issue which she her self was embarrassed about. So at the end of the day it's not a matter of looking down on people. If the service is not right, it is worth pointing out which is what I simply did.

I do fully appreciate your points.
As stated before you are fully entitled to your opinion and I'm certainly not debating this fact as everyone sees and views everything with different eyes.
You will be quite right and I have no doubt that some passengers would have made more of a fuss, admittedly I'm an EK,LH favourite so to speak so perhaps my view can become biased.
It was merely my point of view, I enjoyed the report especially the pictures.
With respect and not wanting to get to hung up on the bag point I don't believe that it's "offered" anywhere on EK website, booking process, T&C's etc although please correct me if im mistaken.
My reasoning mainly came from the comment of complaining to get miles.
You may not appreciate my input although it's also only my point of view however I will continue to enjoy your TR's and others alike.
I fully understand you. I am a die hard LH fan too and might be biased once in a while. The complaint was about the lack of turn down service. The flight attendant was the one who insisted I fill the complaint form because she filled one herself as well as the purser. I didn't ask for it. I recently just joined skywards and I taught to my self hmm let me see if they could compensate me with some miles. I got the idea from complaints I have read from people who got miles because of their negative feedback albeit on other airlines. I was basically trying my luck:D
As for the bags, I know it is not stated on their site but it's also the same way addressing a passenger by name is not mentioned on their site too. These are all little additions that they don't have to put on any of their marketing medium as they are not major selling points but are still things that make first class, first, and differentiates the service from business. You know, not to make it just look like a glorified J class service.

At the end of the day, it is a given fact EK's crews are the most inconsistent, you get the really good ones, and then you also have the worst of their kind, and that too on the same flight and in the same cabin as well!!!. And to have this inconsistency, especially unfriendliness, in First Class is just not acceptable.
I've done quite a few EK sectors and only my last one with them had almost consistent service, which lead me to write this report Emirates - You've Won My Heart! Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 22): At the end of the day, it is a given fact EK's crews are the most inconsistent, you get the really good ones, and then you also have the worst of their kind
No. It is in no way a "given fact" unless you have some sort of reliable statistics to back that up. It may be your experience, and you may be supported by anecdotal evidence from others and/or popular EK folklore, but this does not constitute a "fact." I am in no way EK's most frequent flyer (I probably fly around 10 to 12 sectors a year with them in F and J), but the vast majority of flights in my experience have been staffed by crew who are polite, friendly, competent and courteous. I have had no more bad experiences with EK crew than I have with other airlines. Again, my experiences only.
I do however completely agree with you about ogepma's photo of the A340-500 wing!
As for the EK First Class cabin - well fake wood and gold trim is not entirely to my taste but I withold criticism because I hope I'm broad minded enough to understand that EK is truly a global carrier aiming to appeal to a great diversity of people, not just Westerners. And what may seem tacky and fairly unrefined to my senses may be regarded by someone else as a great display of opulence and luxury. Horses for courses really. But yes, personally I would take the ambience of the new BA F (if only I could try it!) over the EK F cabin

On a side note, I was thinking about the food, as I always do, and thought it odd how airlines don't seem to think about the food they give out. Surely cheese for a night flight is not a good idea.
I also thought a lot of the stuff would cause flatulence too ( the dried fruits with the cheese). Not really what you want in a small cabin. Anyway, the Emirates First class flight experience and the Armani Hotel all looked fantastic.
Look forward to your next report.

EK's crew as well as ground staff are trained to address all pax by name, irrespective of class. Whilst most crew follow the rules, ground personnel often give it a miss.
However, stowing luggage is not somthing that is part of the crew training. It is basically a voluntary natural gesture to help guests and is left to the crew's discretion. Apparantly stowing customer luggage is among the leading causes of lower back injuries to crew.
Talking about arrogance, I have personally seen a lot of J pax (healthy men) asking petite crew to stow their heavy bags up just coz they have a J class seat. Thats real arrogance, the TR's tone is not.

I do agree with you about appealing to a wider audience and to be honest, the wood doesn't look fake up close. The problem is that there are just to many things around. I was initially confused by the complexity of the suite. The Arabs are known for their bling but there are more subtle and elegant ways to present this type of luxury. Etihad for example has a good balance between Arabian luxury and understated luxury and of course we have the completely understated concepts of LH & BA 's new F cabins too. But then again, I would definitely not turn down another flight on EK F

LOL Thanks for that. I actually had to read it again to see if I was arrogant. About J pax, I once had an experience on VS J were a woman stationed a flight attendant in front of her seat after the meal service to ''help'' her with her large make-up kit. She kept asking her to bring it down and take it up. It was a really weird thing to watch and I am sure the flight attendant would have been really annoyed. And this woman was not disabled in any way.

Hi flightsimboy,
No danger of a war of words Firstly I fully respect your opinion and would even concede there may be an underlying grain of truth. However I still beg to differ. Maybe it is my scientific training that makes me recoil from conclusions drawn from anecdotal evidence and/or a paucity of data - even in the vaunted collection of aviation wisdom that is airliners.net. The examples you cite are a vanishingly small percentage of the number of passengers EK flies every year, Sam Chui not withstanding All I am saying is that it is not reasonable or accurate to extrapolate from a small absolute number of experiences to draw big conclusions or make generalisations that can't be supported. At least no more for EK than any other comparably sized airline or company.
As for
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 26): When the FAs themselves confess to you that service levels have dropped and are conciously aware of the failing standards, then you have it straight from the horse's mouth!!
I do know from the horse's mouth - not individual FAs, but those involved with EK CC training, that there is no policy to somehow manage a decline in standards. The lapse of an individual FA (or even a team of FAs) on a particular flight as experienced by a particular passenger may represent a set of circumstances at that time, but it does not mean this reflects a new training regime in which quality standards have been diminished from previous ones.

I completely agree with you! I certainly would not decorate my front room in the style of EK's First class cabin! My point was not aimed at you specifically, but was addressing more broadly those who believe that good taste is defined by their tastes, the reality being that such a thing varies between cultures, and between people of the same culture. Unfortunately it often seems to be Westerners (of which I am one!) who are most parochial when it comes to this. Thank you again for an excellent trip report

Although I have some up and down F class trip on Emirates in earlier years, I do feel they are trying really hard to tackle the inconsistency. The problem is when you have over 80(?) nationalities made up the cabin crew, the inconsistency is always going to be there. On my EK flights, I found the South Asians, Africans, Thais, Malays, Lebanese, Egyptians to be much more hospitable than say South Koreans, Japanese, Chinese and Eastern Europeans. But this is just from my own perception and experience. By no means it is a constant thing.

This is actually an issue that has been mentioned so many times before. It is good they have a good variety of crew from all over the world, they just need to train them better. They are turning into a quantity is all that matters airline.
