Once again, the Republicans use a song against the will of the artist.
This time, the song "Barracuda" by Heart (1977) is being used by the GOP to boast about that governor from Alaska.
Born In The U.S.A. Reagan tried to use it but Bruce Springsteen wouldn't let 'em. (1984)
Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bush wanted to use it but Bobby McFerron wouldn't let 'em (1988)
Centerfield - Dubya wanted to use it but John Foggerty wouldn't let 'em (2000)
Still The One - Dubya tried to use it but John Hall (from the Orleans) wouldn't let 'em. (2004)
Barracuda - McCain/Palin tries to use it but Ann & Nancy Wilson wont let 'em (2008)
For a political party that seems to hate the entertainment industry, they seem to love the music and try to use it for their political rallies.

Like the article said, though, Heart might not have a say in the matter. ASCAP was paid the appropriate licencing fee by the group it seems. ASCAP, as well as others, has the blanket licencing agreement for thousands of songs. I do not believe that artists can pick and choose who plays them. It is how radio stations are allowed to play the songs they play.

If you want to have the power to keep your music out of the hands of those you find objectionable then you'll have to do your own copyright enforcement and not use ASCAP, BMI, etc. However, Heart and others are far too greedy and lazy to do this. Let's face it, if a radio station suddenly has the choice of writing a separate check to Heart for the privilege of playing their music or simply taking it off the playlist, it's gone. Too much trouble. Whiny bitches IMO.

From the article:
Despite the Wilson sisters' objections, one of the song's co-writers said he was "thrilled" that the song was used.
In an e-mail to Reuters, the band's former guitarist, Roger Fisher, said it was a win-win situation. Heart gets publicity and royalties, while the Republicans benefit from "the ingenious placement of a kick-ass song," Fisher said.
But in a subsequent email, Fisher said he strongly endorsed the Democratic ticket, and would donate a portion of royalties he receives from the Republicans' airing of "Barracuda" to the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama.
My comments:
The Wilson sisters,Jackson Browne and other artists need to lighten up.As a moderate, I feel music in American politics is fair game just like private listening. All we need is for some idoit political extremist, artist or otherwise, to start calling for boycott and stop buying of a artist work due their parties choice.Wouldn't that be fun.

Which I consider very brilliant.
Quoting KingAir200 (Reply 7): Allegedly, this is George's favorite song. I wonder if he knows about the rather contrasting political views of Fogerty...
I doubt Dubya knows much of anything.
Quoting L-188 (Reply 8): in the end the only reason they are bitching is because of who used it, not because they where't paid for the use.
Well isn't that what the article is saying?
That is exactly what Heart is saying.
Are there any 'talented' Republican artist out there that the Republicans can use for their campaigns?
I know Gene Simmons of Kiss is a Republican, why can't they use some of their songs?
Oh wait, the religious right wouldn't approve.
Oh well.

About Fisher.Sure, more power to him.

Wow, 'fly. You could write headlines for the New York Times! "steals?" kind of makes it sound like the Republicans took something they had no right to. The article you linked to specifically states the RNC obtained permission from the license holder of the song and paid for its use. That's not stealing, but fair use. Two days later, the has-been sisters of Heart found out and decided to throw a hissy-fit.
But, why let the facts get in the way of a good headline.

No; no sour-grapes, and I'd never object to them voicing their displeasure with how "their" song was used. But if they had wanted to control the use of the song, maybe they shouldn't have sold the rights to it? And I DO find it dubious that your thread title claims the RNC "stole" the song. They had permission to use it from the license holder and paid them for its use. That's not stealing.
Tell me though, when was the last time you heard anything about one-hit-wonders Heart? And hearing the song "Barracuda" on the local classic rock station doesn't count.
Good job for the sisters though, getting their names back in the press, maybe they'll get to play a couple of sold out coffee houses or college bars now.
I'm just tired of reading misleading headlines about Ms Palin over the past few days. Example from the Chicago Tribune:
"Palin Claim on eBay Plane Doesn't Fly"
Then read the article, and it mentions in the 3rd paragraph that, yes the plane WAS listed on eBay (3x actually) but eventually sold outside the auction site. As she claimed in her speech "I put it on eBay"

Doubt it but if it's true, why use products of the 'liberal media' for your campaign rallies?
Why not have Pastors & Reverends with their all heterosexual choirs sing songs of praise for their political rallies?

Maybe after Palin and McCain lose and she goes back to AK an then runs for a second term as Governor she can use this as her theme song, note the irony of having a Gay man sing it.
