Today, Northpark Center's expansion officially opens. The mall, originally built in 1965, now has 2.35 million square feet of retail space, surpassing the Houston Galleria (2.26 million sq. ft) as the largest mall in Texas. I was there about a week ago and was actually impressed...and I hate malls. They have maintained the original architecture and feel throughout the expansion; they have added a 1.4 acre park in the middle of the mall, adjacent to the food court; they have branched out from being primarily a mall for the extremely wealthy to a mall where there is pretty much something for everybody. A new 15 screen AMC Theater opens today, as well as about 15 new stores on the north side, completing the square. Barney's New York and about 20 more new stores will open later this year. By the end of the year, Northpark will house 235 stores, including Lanciani, Intermix, Michael Kors, CrepeMaker, Original Penguin, Na Hoku, Energie, Hibachi-San, Lush, Porsche Design, Sheke, H Hilfiger, and Hanna Andersson, which will be each company's only store in Texas.
Parking is still a problem, although it can be somewhat mitigated if you do not try to enter at Northwest Highway. Instead, take Boedecker and park in the garage adjacent to Nordstrom's. Most of the new expansion is closest to Nordstrom's anyway.
Anyway, thought some of y'all might like to know. Which Which in the food court is a pretty decent sandwich place; food court is located on the north side, adjacent to the park and the theater.
