Ever since I was stationed ay NHZ, I have been intrigued with Goose Bay. What is stationed there? and what is the Air Base's purpose? It seems to far from the coast to serve ASW. Also, is it busy (in terms of takeoffs/landings)? Is the ATC staffed by the Canadian Military or are they Nav Canada controllers? Just curious.

The base was used primarily for NATO training but there is nothing of the sort there right now.
All that is left is 444 Squadron that houses three CH-146 Griffon helicopters for rapid response to local emergencies during flight operations along with maintaining an twelve-hour search and rescue standby for national SAR taskings. Besides that, it's a money pit for the government, non of the buildings are being used, yet they are still unnecessarily heated and maintained. The base also serves as an FOL for 425 sqn.

When did NATO stop using it? I would have thought its surroundings would serve a continued purpose for open space free wheeling low level training. I used to work in the bush north of there and it was an impressive site to see jets from various countries come screaming down fjords and valleys.
there is economy class, business class, first class...then Concorde..pure class

From wiki:
"In 2004 the RAF announced its intent to close the permanent RAF detachment, effective March 31, 2005. The German and Italian air forces have agreements signed to use the base until 2006, however these have not been renewed. The base continues in its role as a low-level tactical training facility and as a forward deployment location for Canadian Forces Air Command, although the total complement of Canadian Forces personnel numbers less than 100."

Goose is also the favourite last place in Canada for ferry pilots to refuel in light aircraft bound for Europe. Next stop is usually Narsarsuaq (BGBW) in Greenland then Reykjavik(BIRK) in Iceland and then on to Scotland. ...I went through there on eight occasions last year with various aircraft types.
