Does anyone have any updates on the new pier (domestic?) that is/was being built at LGW? That old one really was getting cramped and tatty when I last passed through there (a couple of years ago)

From the Gatwick web site:

"Baggage system and Pier 1

We are building the complete new baggage system to provide reliability and flexibility for our airlines and passengers. The new baggage building will have an added dimension, surrounded by five new aircraft stands, including new gateroom facilities. This will replace pier 1 and be complete by March 2015."

There are now just a handful of domestic flights using this Pier while they complete the building of a new domestic arrivals area which is taking over one baggage reclaim unit in the international arrivals area, once that is in place they will start the demosihing of pier 1 and temporary bussing of passengers. Its going to be a pain for a while but the plans for the new pier will make it worth the wait.

Is this replacing the gate 55A/B/C... in the North terminal or is it part of the south terminal?

South Terminal... is North gate 55ABC that horrible bus gate where you have to go down neverending ramps?

How about a second runway for LGW? It must be the busiest single runway airport in the Universe!

It's not that bad, at times it's borderline quiet.

Gate 55 is the domestic lounge at the North Terminal. The Gate / Stand tie up is :
55A (Possibly Stand 54)
55B Stand 551
55C Stand 552
55D Stand 553
55E Stand 554
55F Stand 56
55G wfu as 56 is no longer split 56L / 56R
55H Stand 57R
55J Stand 57L

It's still heavily used by flybe and Aurigny, Ryanair and easyJet moved out to Pier 2 and the North Terminal. However it's going to be busy on Pier 2 once Pier 1 goes. I got a photo last year coming into Gate 5 that had a sign marking equipment for the BAC111. It's quite historic...
