Quotes:
An Air India flight to Mumbai was grounded at the airport on Monday after the crew spotted an unexpected guest on board — a cobra.
The snake was found inside a domestic aircraft (Airbus A319) that had arrived from Srinagar (IC-822) and was at parking bay number 150. Around 9.30 pm, airline staff on maintenance duty found the snake below a seat. The plane was to take-off for Mumbai on Tuesday morning.
“There was commotion which scared the snake and it went further inside,” said an airport source. The snake crawled inside a small air vent below the seat after which the staff opened all doors and unscrewed panels.
The airline informed the airport authorities, who called the NGO Wildlife SOS. But the snake remained untraceable. “The plane was fumigated but it seems the snake went further inside the aircraft,” he said.
The snake was not found despite repeated checks. “The plane was already late for the Mumbai flight and a spare plane had to be used,” the source said.

I vaugely remember hearing a rumor (or news report actually...anyone know???) a few years ago now about a Taipan snake on a Qantas flight, and the aircraft was fumigated yet no snake could be found either?

400:1 for the Taipan ( potency of the venom that is..)
Meaning the quantity of one bite of an inland Taipan is between 300-400 times more powerful than the bite of an Indian cobra (not the King-cobra that is thoug, who usually injects large quantites...)
I would have brought in a mangoose..they go after cobras and have a great odor-capability to trace them.. http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=P3BfL7X1uU8&NR=1

"In awake of the snake event involving Air India, airlines will now be required to have a safety pamphlet involving what to do in case snakes board the aircraft.

Jokes aside, imagine what would have happened if the snake had been discovered by a pax in flight! Would it have been cause for an emergency landing? I suspect there are marshals on these flights who would have shot the critter dead. Or maybe an explosive decompression like in 'Alien'.
