"We'll be reaching millions of airline passengers in their seats and millions more through the power of word of mouth," said Paul Jenkins, Ad-Air's managing director. "Ad-Air will be offering advertisers a simply unprecedented marketing opportunity and creative agencies a unique canvas to work with."

There was a post a few days ago about putting billards up near the approach ends of runways. A good point was brought up. Since people can not use portable electronics below 10000 ft, they are more likely to look out the window while on approach or departure. This makes sense to me, mostly because it's true for me.

My prediction is this will cause a small splash, then an uproar, and will then be regulated. That seems to be the inevitable cycle with this sort of thing when someone insists on taking it to the extreme.

One quite notable example is the main Target distribution warehouse near ATL with ... yep, a humongeous red Target painted on the roof (I've always figured that's what the russkies used to aim the ICBMs ...).
Several other trucking companies near ATL also have their names/logos on their warehouse roofs.
We're not talking about public lands, but private land. If the owners of such private properties feel they can make good sums leasing their land for the advertising why not?
Anyhow such advertising is not new to LA. Over the years various roofs and parking lots have been painted for advertising. Virgin Atlantic for two years until recently advertised on the roof of Hollywood Park race track just underneath the LAX approach path.

United has a large United logo on the roof of the United Center in Chicago. I have never flown over it which makes me think it isn't really in the direct flight path of any ORD or MDW approaches...may be too close to downtown.

The straight-in approach to 32L goes pretty much over it, IIRC, but that's an unusual approach except late at night. Occasionally when the field is on an east flow, planes coming from the southeast for 4R will also pass over it.

Advertising is run on impressions. The more people who see your ad and make "impressions" the more valuable. For the relatively small number of people who would see the ad looking out of the windows of planes on approach would not be as important as the news coverage of the ad itself on local and national media. There are green billboards on a grassy slope on the way into downtown Toronto on the Gardiner Expressway. Basically logos in flowers, boxwood, white stone and letters. They get "impressions" everyday from the freeway traffic and from the commuters and rail passengers that pass by. Much nicer than a hill of weeds or regular billboards.
I don't know about your area, but around here (Chicago area) those slopes are one of the few places wildflowers are allowed to grow within the metro area itself. That's a better use than manicured invasive psecies.

Yeah we have wildflowers planted on the sides of freeways and highways especially outside the city. I can see having signs on roofs etc. But a three football field size ad sounds expensive for what you get.
Around the YYZ they don't plant anything that encourages wildlife because they have enough of that already. You routinely see foxes inside the fence of YYZ. That and the Raptor program helps keep the bird population down. The call sign for the hawk/falcon handlers is "birdman". The otherday I saw a women in a parking lot immediately under the glide path and just across the street from the end of Runway 5/24 dump a bag of broken up bread to feed the birds. Sparrows, starlings and gulls landed in droves. I pulled beside her and politely suggested that it was a bad idea because of bird strikes. She immediately fired back it is a free country and you can't take away my rights to feed birds. A friend works in that building and when I told him about her - he saw red. Apparently the security for the building has spoken to her about it the past. They have her on security video and are planning on charging her with trespassing or littering. Turns out the birds sit and crap on some of the employees cars in the building . Here I thought the building was doing its part for airsafety.
There is a push to turn these vast roofs into green roofs to help with rain runoff, lower temperatures in urban areas, and increase insulation in the buildings. Maybe a "reasonable" advertising scheme combined with a green conversion would have legs.
