DUBAI — As the global aerospace rivals — Boeing and Airbus —wait for clinching the $20 billion Emirates order for their mid-sized long range aircraft, the Dubai-based airline said its decision on the final choice will be further delayed even beyond the Farnborough air show in July, where the decision was widely expected to be announced.
...
"We cannot give a specific timeframe for making the orders at this stage. It is too early, and we are carefully studying the options," he said, echoing Maurice Flanagan, Emirates vice-chairman, who has said in London that Emirates was in no rush to order new mid-sized models. "We could wait a year or two. This is a plane we'll have for 25 years, it's a 25-year decision."
Do they seriously mean they are going to keep an aircraft for 25 years, or are they saying they will keep the model family for that long? Seems like an awfully long time to me. And certainly sounds un-SQ like.

That's what I'd have thought. EK seems flushed with cash and is trying to be a worl-beater. I'd very much doubt they would like to have 25 yr old a/c in their fleet. What they're saying is that they will choose an a/c type and stick with that type for as long as it's available.

I don't see how you can plan for an aircraft model to be in your fleet for 25 years. The 200 to 300 pax market has seen a lot of models come and go. Seems like the worst place to bet on model staying power.

Worst case scenario - no replacement thats worth the extra cost for the next 25 years.

True. But by planning for it, they can ensure that they don't get caught with a model they regret buying for that long. It's a just in case thing I think. I'm sure they're hoping for better models to come out sooner, but if they don't, or if the replacements are not suitable for EK for whatever reason, then they'll still have an a/c that they are happy with, if you see what I mean. They basically want to buy an a/c they are 100% happy with over the long-term.

Indeed. They are also well aware that 787 slots are running out in the short term, and that, if that's the aircraft they really want, they'd better dont wait to long with placing an order. 2 years seems like a long time to take a decision on purchasing the 787. The aircraft 'insiders and experts ' consider ideal for EK. Or maybe, these experts are wrong again and EK isn't all that much impressed with it, and hopes for a better alternative from another manufacturer.
It depends, how many times has SQ postponed their forthcoming order in this categorie of aircraft? They both seem to be rather carefull in their selection of medium sized longhaulers.
