We have worked out, ahem, "elsewhere" that it was last night's delayed BA176:
BA0176 JFK CWL 27 DEC 19:30 28 DEC 01:37 Actual
Since (according to ba.com) there were other delays to the ex-JFK flights last night, my conjecture/questions were:
1. Why it was so delayed (when later flights departed before it) - problems detected at JFK in the first place?
2. Why there were only 2 pax on board a 744! Perhaps they did move everyone else from this flight to the other ones if they found problems at JFK, and the 2 were late commers/couldn't fit on the 182? Maybe BA took them on the delayed 176 which needed to get back to LHR anyway?
Shame it had to divert, but being one of only two pax on a 744 must be one hell of an experience!

being there were 17 crew on board, I would have wanted to get the 9 serving me. If I was deemed to be less senior and only had 8 crew catering to my every whim, I would be very offended...

If it had been UA they would have said that due to the large number of passengers they would not have time for the beverage service.

Quoting Bigginhill (Reply 19): Passengers had been transferred on to other flights going to Heathrow.
2 Chose to stay on board. Maybe they live in Cardiff?
No, there were only 2 passengers on this flight to begin with. When the flight was originally delayed yesterday, all other passengers were rerouted except for these two. The flight was destined for LHR and diverted to Cardiff. They have been rerouted from Cardiff using taxis at BAs cost.

It was the second incident involving the plane in 24 hours.
Earlier, the aircraft had suffered a bird strike as it flew into New York.
This led to a six-hour delay for the plane at JFK airport.
Nearly all the passengers were put on other flights, leaving just two on board the jumbo jet when it was involved in the incident as it headed to the UK.

And bet that baby was full of cargo so maybe not a loss operating flight after all?? The 2 passengers could have actually been the crews family/friends/partners so thats why they were on board?? Just another idea?

First off: Is it possible that the Birdstrike, assuming it occured in the foreward portion of the plane and it's possible damage, may have caused some kind of undetected electrical short that with time (vibration, normal flight, ect.) broke out causing the smoke in the cockpit? Second: Even with only 19 people on board all are safe, and that's what really matters. Have a Happy New Year.

25 AIRCANL1011: Cardiff would be the best place for BA to divert the B744 to as they have a maintenace facility there. This must have caused a lot of excitement at CW
