Is The Term 'flag Carrier' Used Anymore?

When I was a kid a remember hearing the term 'flag carrier' a lot and I thought, well, that must be because it's the national airline. But, the US has no national carrier and Pan Am, TWA, so on had flags on their aircraft. So I figured that it must be because the carrier flies international routes. But there are domestic carriers that display the national flag as well. Any answers?

Thanks for the input.

Yes, in both cases.

All US airlines that fly internationally (or over international waters) have to be granted flag carrier staus.

Frontier has just been granted that, and this article explains it a bit:

However, under it's oprevious provisional staus, F9 did not have the US flag on it's aircraft. It does now.

US airlines that onlky fly domestically are not required to "fly the flag," but most put it on their aircraft after 9/11.
