This isn't some kind of monarchy, and we don't anoint companies as the official this or that of the country. |

Not true.
In the US, under FAA regs, you have Part 121 Domestic carriers (think Southwest, and others thay don't fly outside the USA), Part 121 Flag carriers (think AA, United, and others that have both domestic and foreign flights) and Part 121 Supplemental carriers (think non-sked operators who fly domestic and/or foreign flights). Just because an airline is registered as US airline doesn't automatically mean that they're a flag carrier.

Read the F9 announcement. Absolutely fascinating that a U.S. carrier needs to have flag carrier status to serve AK and HI.
Equally interesting that you don't need to have similar status to serve Mexico (and probably Canada).
