Hi,
I purchased a Nikon D50 yesterday and I'm very excited to start using it. As a "bonus" for spending more than 1000 dollars on it (the camera + lens), the store decided to "throw in" an extra battery. I just noticed this morning, that it's not a Nikon brand battery...
I can't even find a name on the box. All it sais

For EN-EL3
Standard Battery
Should I use it with my camera? A lot of brands (ex Nokia) tell you not to use a 3rd party battery.

It will be just fine. I have an aftermarket 2ND battery for my D70 and it works great. I don't think it has quite as much life to it as the Nikon battery does but it works when you need it.

Normal chargeable Batteries don't have the same "power" after e.g. 100 charges....thats the memory effect. Normally IIRC Li.Ion don't have it at all.

Not a Nikon user here, but a while back I bought two non-Canon batteries for my 300D. They have 1800mAh which is more than the original Canon ones, plus they cost only 1/10 of the original price. They work great, at least as long as the Canon one I'd say.
No memory means, that every time you charge the battery, even if its only for a couple of minutes and you put it back in the camera, the camera will tell you it'S fully charged which its clearly not, but since the battery has no memory it doesn't know. Every time you take it out of the charger it'll appear as fully charged. The good thing is, that you can charge it whenever you want, you don't have to wait for it to be totally empty. That's the advantage of Li-Ion Batteries, which usually don't have a memory.

I've called the store where I bought my camera and the sales rep. said it wouldn't make a difference, however, if I want to exchange it (it was free, at a value of 44.85), I could do it and they would either charge me the difference (for a Nikon brand) or just give it to me for free.
I can't decide on this, but should ANYTHING ever happen to my camera, I don't want to have Nikon tell me: "Well, sorry sir, but you didn't use our products. It's not our fault". I think I may just end up exchanging it. It's 20 dollars extra at most.

Yea, that's all I see on the news and in the paper anymore... third party batteries exploding. Close to epidemic....

Def one of your best Jeff! I will say though I do agree with the concept of only using name brand stuff when it comes to camera equipment but for a battery I don't think it has to say Nikon on it and truth be known I don't think Nikon makes their own batteries anyway, do they?

You shouldn't have a problem with a 3rd party battery. Personally, if it was me, I would return it and try to get a Nikon brand battery. Better be safe then sorry. But I don't buy cheap 3rd party stuff for my D70s and D200.

The memory effect goes back a long time to the old Ni Cad batteries. These type of batteries need to be fully discharged before they can be recharged to a full 100% capacity. If you do not discharge them before, they will show fully charged but are not.
All modern DSLRs now have Lithium Ion batteries which do not have that effect and can be charged to a full 100% even if they are only used for a couple of minutes.

My only word of caution would be to avoid like the plague the Hong Kong / Chinese items seen at stupidly cheap prices on Ebay. It simply is not possible to produce a good quality Li-Ion battery for the prices they quote.

I bought some "stupidly cheap" EL3 equivalent batteries from Ebay a year or so ago and they are fine - haven't exploded yet anyway. Funnily enough I did have to return my Nikon brand EL3.
