Hey all,
Just been having some fun (or trying to) in Flight Sim, but having trouble with something. I tried to do a fuel imbalance on purpose (very little fuel on left side, full on right side) and tried to do a crossfeed, with no luck. It makes a noise like it's doing something, but the numbers on the screen for the left side won't increase. This is on the Airbus A321. Also, even when the quantity for the left side hits 0 the engine 1 keeps running. Increase realism to the max and even tried reinstalled FSX completely. Is this one of those features that doesn't actually do anything?
Thanks for the help, and sorry if it's a bit of a silly question.

Hmmm I just tested out a fuel leak to see if I could get a proper fuel imbalance, but both my tanks ran out in no time. I couldn't even get a leak on just one side. This is quite frustrating. I'm starting to come to the conclusion that FSX isn't very realistic.

I've only played around on FSX but have years of flying on FS9 and the previous versions. Having said that, I'm not sure what the settings menu looks like for FSX, but I'm sure its not that different from previous versions.
You do have to make sure that your realism settings are set to high and you need to click on various options such as engines quiting when running out of fuel.

It's only as realistic as you set it up to be. Are you following the preflight checklists? Are you setting your controller to perform the checklist tasks? Using the kneeboard checklist before flying? Or are you just playing in "Free Flight" and winging it?

Now, see this guy says he's "playing around" but I know he's a serious sim. flyer. There is a difference. It takes some tweaking, trial and error to achieve realistic results. It's not a "game".

Exactly! Even though I have my actual pilots license, I know very well that FS can only get realistic to a point, and it does this very well. Its still a far ways from real flying, but its pretty damn good for something that only costs $50 and can run on any household PC.

Which is how we all learned. Just play around with it and you'll be amazed at the stuff you learn and how quickly.

You have to separate the default aircraft from the FS "framework". Many 3rd-party developers have produced aircraft that get far more out of FS than the default aircraft do. That's the way I prefer it - I don't want to pay for quality aircraft that someone else wants but I don't. That's why I bought the PMDG 737NG and, especially, the 744. It's a long time since I last tried it but I'm pretty sure their cross-feeds work.

Thanks for the responses guys.
While I don't "play" it as if I'm flying a real plane, I mostly try to get up in the air, do a big circle, and try to land again. Usually try to change things up a bit (adding a bit of weather, flying at night, etc). I try to take it as seriously as I can. As far as tweaking it though, I've gone through every setting I can find and tried to make the program itself act as realistically as possible.
I will give the PMDG aircraft a try though. I keep hearing about PMDG addons, so they must be pretty good.

Be warned - you'll have to read the manual to appreciate the benefits of the PMDG stuff over freeware aircraft! In particular, you should learn how to use the FMC, autopilot modes and engine start/shut-down procedures.

I'd be more then happy to As someone who plans on starting flight school this November (yeah I know, probably a bad time to start), I'd like to take FS as seriously as possible. Thanks for the warning though!
